playing in neal’s yard.

i’ve always said you can walk down 4 street SW in Mission with your eyes closed and know which block you’re on: the yeasty smell from Wurst, the spices and strong tequila punch from Añejo, and the freshly ground beans wafting into the street from Phil & Sebastian.

and then my nose was hit with something different, the clean and floral scent of the neighbourhood’s newest storefront. Neal’s Yard Remedies has come to Canada. the company prides themselves on ethical organic health and beauty that has been handmade in the UK since 1981. the store features everything from skincare products, to makeup, to tealeaves and cookbooks. plus, it’s beautiful.

Neals Yard Remedies Canada

the team at Neal’s Yard Remedies likes to think of themselves as pioneers. today, awareness and interest in natural remedies, skin and body care are on the increase, but when they opened the first shop in Covent Garden, they were one of the few pushing against the synthetic chemical approach to skin and health care that had been adopted by much of the industry. their vision was to bring the expertise of the apothecary and holistic approach to health and beauty to local people and their communities.

Neals Yard Wine and Roses

alongside a handful of other beauty bloggers, the owner, staff members and team from the UK walked us through an activity of selecting essential oils to make an aromatherapy shower gel and massage oil. after smelling a handful of top notes, middle notes and base notes we got to select our favourites to combine.

Aromatherapy Essential Oils

i picked my essential oil blend based on the scent, but it turns out they are very complimentary in benefits as well and to the nose.

Essentail Oils

grapefruit (top note):

  • cures depression and relieves stress
  • good for treating oily skin and acne
  • beneficial for treating stiffness and cramps in muscles

rose (middle note):

  • boosts confidence and fights depression
  • improves skin texture and health, and youthful skin
  • cures convulsion, muscle pulls, cramps
  • helps stimulate and boost libido
  • reduces blood pressure and helps to cure headaches

geranium (middle note):

  • prevents muscles and skin from sagging
  • treats acne and helps fade scars on skin
  • treats depression and anxiety
  • has a positive effect on PMS

cedarwood (base note):

  • reduces inflammation, skin peeling, and eczema
  • cures acne
  • eliminates cough and removes phlegm

Neals Yard Remedies

basically, when i use these creations i’m going to smell like summer, and be the happiest person with the most glowing skin. that doesn’t suck.

Wild Rose Beauty Balmwant the best of the best? then go with the wild rose beauty balm. it nurtures and revitalizes all skin types. this puppy is versatile, it can be used as a rich cleanser, gentle exfoliant or deeply nourishing balm to quench areas of dry of dehydrated skin. the exceptionally high levels of wild rosehip oil – a potent antioxidant proven to help repair, firm and smooth the skin – are combined with geranium, starflower, hemp and rosemary oil, to help decongest and enrich the skin, restoring its natural radiance.

i left with my own pot, and while the texture is thicker than a normal face cream, it does beautiful things for the softness and glow of your face.

go visit the store at 2207 4 street SW. not in Calgary? you can do all of your beauty shopping online at nealsyardremedies.ca.
